All You Need To Know About ‘Being Authentic’

The most terrible thing about trying to be he Savior of Mankind is that it never works. If you find yourself stuck out on a limb as some sort of Urban Cyclist whose job it is to keep the Movement going, you will be disappointed. Not even Communism is taken seriously anymore. Scratch a Russian these days and he bleeds money. In a few decades no one will remember anything about pretty green bike lanes. Instead they will be trying to find out how to visit Timbuktu via virtual reality devices. Bicycles will still be around but in a form that will not please today’s Social Activists. My guess is that there will be motors attached. The most likely kind will be electric or hydrogen fuel cell. Some scientists will have discovered a method of exercising that does not involve being outdoors and people born during that period will probably not miss the experience. Sad, but true.

If you idea of success is too limited you will never find a true challenge in life. The challenge of the future will not be trying to limit the number of automobiles but in trying to get any and all forms of transportation to play well together. Surely enough someone is going to come along and declare that riding on the backs of llamas is what God intended. And a group of knuckleheads will buy this idea and purchase an island and ride llamas.

But the fellow or gal who will gain the esteem of the entire planet will find a way to get people from point A to point B at the speed of light. Literally. In fact my hunch is that tele-transportation like the stuff of sci-fi movies is actually going to take place.

Nobody will be worried about bicycles one whit. In fact the first guy to create a cheap, one passenger velomobile that can fold up into a hat box will become a billionaire. That device will have a very small, extremely efficient power plant. It will be guided by a system that knows how to get where you want to go with the least bit of conflict with the transport of others.

One day traffic jams will be a distant memory. I figure if you removed every car and bicycle from the planet, right now you would still have traffic jams of pedestrians. The problem is not the device being used but rather the protocol for its operation. Fix that problem and everything else becomes simple.
