The Aftermath of a Troll Fest

So we lock whole threads instead of dealing with the specific offense?

Seems unfair to people who are not acting like complete jerks…

Not to mention it makes threads related pop up like this one.

It also, unless you went to the trouble to notify the people you think were mean, does nothing to solve the problem of bad behavior.

First they came for the trolls, and I said nothing…

Hi Doug,

As said in the post, I’d be more than willing to meet up over a beer or over a bike ride to discuss. In fact, I’d love to do that. Maybe Sunday?

Best,
Katie

I really don’t feel like taking up what little free time I have to talk about people who behave like children on the internet. Especially when the exact same conversation can be had here where the rules can be made clear and the people who caused the thread to be closed can know.

I really only have three questions:

  • What were the things that were ‘over the line’ and caused the thread to be closed?
  • Were the people who caused it to be closed notified they were the reason and what it was they did?
  • Will it be reopened after a cooling off period or do we now prevent anyone from having a conversation about something when a single person misbehaves?

I don’t think any of those are complex enough they cannot be easily answered here or that they require either of us to waste the time it takes to meet up about it.

Thanks, Doug for the response. I’d still love to meet up in the future, even if it is just to chew the fat, b/c you are fun to hang with. Plus, I am a big believer that things discussed in person can be better clarified.

This being said, I’ll do my best to respond. I’ll start with that I am learning this moderator role and am imperfect at it. I’ll do my best to admit where I might be wrong.
At the end of the day, I think all Chainlink members are trying to be a community and follow the site guidelines.

  • What were the things that were ‘over the line’ and caused the thread to be closed?/Were the people who caused it to be closed notified they were the reason and what it was they did? I don’t want to point additional fingers, but there were a few posts following my original ones that mocked people. There were some with thoughts on moderation or moderation guidelines that helped. The other posts didn’t give tips on how to moderate; instead, they (whether intentionally or not) mocked someone’s post. I (perhaps naively) hoped that people would pause to examine there posts to see if it fell into the ‘finger-pointing’ category.
  • Where I went wrong: I could and should have reached out and had a phone call with the individuals whose posts were suspect. I get this now and realize I was wrong.
  • Will it be reopened after a cooling off period or do we now prevent anyone from having a conversation about something when a single person misbehaves?

Good question and one that we are learning from. At the original outset, some community manager research states* a piece of moderation is to work with discussions that have concluded their original discussion. By this thread’s existence, it is clear the original intent of moderation questions weren’t concluded. I think in this instance the discussions will continue on this thread.

It raises the larger question of what a cooling off is or when to unlock. I don’t have the perfect answer on when a cooling off ends. Julie & the other moderators may have ideas on this or recommendations. I went wrong in doing it without the clear indicator it can happen. I am sorry.

As with my original post, we are VERY open to examples of moderation done right and wrong sent to mods @ chainlink.org. I can’t emphasize that enough.

I’m signing off for the night, so a non-response would not mean disinterest. I will respond to any replies in the AM.

*: Part of my day job is Community Mgmt so I read this stuff. I am willing to give the sources if needed.

I disagree with your choice to lock the thread, but your incredible positivity is truly admirable.

I hope you didn’t feel like my continued responses in that thread were part of the problem, Katie.

I’m piping in here to be supportive. I know how much energy it takes to continue engaging in this fashion, and that’s an effort a lot of moderators (in my experience, not speaking of the ones here) don’t undertake because it’s so time- and energy-consuming. I just want you to know that it’s appreciated.
