If you have ever purchased a Bern helmet you know that they ‘fit tight‘. Like Shimano shoes which are cut on a very narrow last, these helmet are designed to fit a specific shape of head better than others. If your head is too round (rather than oval) you may be forced to purchase a helmet from Giro.
Now it turns out that ideas either fit the shape of your head or they don’t. Look around the Urban Cycling Landscape and as with their mindset their choice of helmets is fairly uniform. This uniformity is largely maintained through social pressures. You either see things their way or its the ‘highway‘.
There is no middle point in the thinking of these folks. It is a bit like being a Communist Chinese Leader during the Cold War. Hard-liners were everywhere. Talking about anything the leadership did not like cold cost you time in a camp designed to help you ‘see the light‘ or a premature ‘dirt nap‘.
Today’s American Hard-liners occupy the Far Right Wing of the GOP. They are affectionately known as Tea Partiers. ChainLinkers are the emotional equivalents of the Tea Party. They are rigid beyond belief while thinking of themselves as Liberals.
Their lack of understanding of the nuances of American Politics has made it necessary for them to be reminded to tone down the ‘hard-line‘ rhetoric if they ever hope to get anything meaningful done. But like their Communist and now their Tea Party brethren they view any softening of their position as weakness.
