Due to several Emails to see what a velomobile looks like I have invited The Chicago Suburban Velomobile Club to join me in a ride to Oswego and back with stops at Commissioners Park and the Village Grind. It should be a lot of fun and very interesting to see various versions of this unusual bicycle. Hope to see many of you there.
The second velomobile ride at today’s event is a fellow we met a couple of years ago at the Bike The Drive 2011 event. On that day he was riding a CruzeBike recumbent. The velomobile he was riding today was a Quest from BlueVelo of Canada. The bike was made of carbon fiber and was at least ten pounds lighter in weight than the Glide that Roger Pardon drives. Both are great bikes!
These are the beasts that would make year-round commuting at distances in the 20-25 mile range practical. They are game changers. They can cruise in the mid-30s and because the rider is enclosed you can wear street clothing “under the hood”.
Bikes like these weigh in at about 60 lbs. They use Lithium ion batteries in many cases to power their headlights and turn signals. Dr. Pardon’s Glide even has sprung suspension.
You owe it to yourself to get a chance to see these marvelous creatures “up close and personal”.
