There are many ways to think about buying a new bike. Some go for the gusto. They don’t want to think about prices, discounts, deals, they want the best of the best, the creme dela creme— a high performance racing folding bike like theTern Verge X20 with high-end SRAM RED components and a patented hydroformed frame. But, if you’re like me, you’re looking for something a little more affordable. In this blog, I want to focus on the folding bikes in our shop that offer the best deals— the bikes that, in my opinion, offer the best balance between quality and price.
1) The Tern Link D8 Folding Bike
The Tern Link D8 is the most affordable folding bike that still features high quality parts and hinges. Like all Tern Folding Bikes, the Tern Link D8 feels like a normal bike when you ride it. It uses a Physis handlepost and a durable frame with patented OCL joints and this makes the bike very stable, you wont feel a lot of give when you’re riding, and you’ll be able to cover a lot of distance.
The Tern Link D8 also folds up easily to a very portable package (38cm x 79cm x 72 cm). You’ll be able to fit it in your closet, the trunk of your car, even take it with you into bars and cafes. For a bike that folds this small and rides this well, you won’t be able to find a better price, there’s a reason why the Tern Link D8‘s been one of our best sellers this past year.
2) The Montague Crosstown
The Tern Link D8 is great for commuting, but it’s not built for faster speeds. If you’re looking for something with a little more zip, the Montague Crosstown is a better choice and still in an affordable price range. Unlike the Link D8, The Montague Crosstown is a full sized folding road bike with large 700c wheels. The Montague has a stiff, rock solid frame, and the full sized road bike wheels will allow you to zip along at faster speeds. The Montague Crosstown folds up easily, and although not as small as the Tern Link D8 will still fit easily in a closet or the trunk of your car.
3) The Brompton Folding Bike
Although the Brompton Folding Bike is in higher price range than the previous bikes mentioned, there’s really no denying that it’s one of the best value folding bikes for the price. Although it’s not a high performer like the Verge X20, overall, the Brompton Bike is probably the best folding bike on the market.
In terms of overall craftsmanship it’s a major step up from the Tern Link D8 or Montague Crosstown, hand crafted in London by the best of the best. It makes the perfect commuter bike, rides smoothly, can climb hills with ease, but most distinctively, it folds up smaller than virtually any other bike on the market, and depending on the model weighs as little as 20 lbs. It is also one of the most customizable folding bikes, available with a variety of different handlebars, and a wide assortment of accessories including rear-racks, carrying bags, fenders, lights and much more. Really, all the avid road-bikers I know who buy folding bikes all buy the Brompton Bike.
That’s my take on some our best and most affordable folding bikes. I hope it was helpful, but don’t take my word for it, come by the shop sometime, take a test ride on our folding bikes, and decide for yourself!
