There were hundreds of kites flying as we approached Montrose Harbor. The temperature was around 81° this close to the waters of Lake Michigan. And the breeze that was blowing in off the lake made it pleasant to sit and watch the kites fly as well as to keep a kite aloft.
We circled the event grounds (where earlier this year an off-road criterium had been held) looking at all the kites and the people enjoying the day. Then it was inland towards Native Foods Cafe in Wicker Park.
Along the way we spotted a very impressive mural on the walls of Uplift School and I stopped to commemorate their efforts.
Finally we made our way back through Columbus Park in the Little Italy neighborhood to reach the UIC parking facility where we were parked. A great ride on a gorgeous day!
(Note: I certainly hope that no Tea Party types were enjoying the free event in Montrose Park. I am certain that the cost of the washrooms, and on-duty police to keep things under control must have been an prime example of unnecessary government spending. In fact it would have been wonderful to seem them conducting a demonstration with news media types from Fox on site recording their disgust at such a frivolous use of taxpayer dollars! I imagine too that there would have been some angst on their part over the fact that the crowd was so very ethnically and racially diverse. Lots of people clearly from foreign countries here enjoying life on the taxpayers dime. How disgusting. Where is Joe Walsh when you need him?)
