New Camera Information
If you are a person who enjoys image making and wants a bit of creative control into the bargain, then the Nikon Coolpix P7100 is a camera you might wish to consider. It has a full on automatic mode wherein the camera makes all the decisions for you. But in addition you can set the image taking parameters to suit your needs and that is what this camera offers in spades.
The CCD that is used provides only about 10 megapixels which by todays standards in paltry. Yet its images are generally quite sharp and exceed the clarity of the other point-and-shoot cameras we own with as many as 16 megapixels per image.
What makes the 10 megapixel format work so well? I hope to discover that in a few more weeks. For now I am content to practice image making of some previously visited sites to see if I can improve on the image quality achieved before.

The PDF version of the product manual gives you an overall view of the complexity of the camera’s usage. This is something of a deviation from the generally idiot-proof approach taken by the other point-and-shoot cameras in the Nikon arsenal. It remains to be seen whether the added layer of control is as useful in my hands as it has been for professional photographers who have run this camera through a more rigorous test that I will.
Bob Krist has a delightful review of the previous Nikon Coolpix P7000 model. The newer version of this camera is the Nikon Coolpix P7100. It is supposed to have tackled the performance issues of the former camera while maintaining the image quality of its predecessor.
