A relaxed ride along the Lakefront Path and Burnham Greenway to South Chicago, Hegewisch and across the border to Indiana.
- Vast amounts of delicious food prepared by little old ladies
- Veg friendly
- Polka music and dancing
- Mr. Pierogi and the Piroguettes
- Shaded beer garden with live music
- The best festival “relief facilities” ever (air conditioned, running water and clean!)
We explore the South Side, always have rockstar parking at the festival and delude ourselves into thinking the ride balances out our food intake. Bring a lock, water, sunscreen and some cash for starchy delights.
Route To The Fest
South Side Information
Once you leave the Chicago Lakefront Trail just beyond the South Shore Cultural Center you enter a section of paved streets and neighborhoods. I would suggest using the Cultural Center as a good place to take a group bathroom break. Besides the Center is pretty enough to warrant a stop just to see the flowers and the grounds surrounding the stunning building.
As you make your way around the corner from the Center you will be heading more or less along the length of Route 41. Be sure to take a good look at the Chicago Velodrome being erected at 87th and Burley Avenue. Then continue more or less south alongside Calumet Park to reach Indianapolis Boulevard where you can pick up the Burnham Greenway. (Note: I would in fact suggest altering this route to actually pass through the park itself. You will also find some excellent washroom facilities on the north east corner of the park in a free standing building alongside the lake itself.)
Pierogi Fest is quaint. Whiting is a small town just along the border with Hammond, In. Just in case you are the color motif for the fest is PINK. Event the staff shirts are of this color. The banner across the main entrance is as well. The fountain nearby sports waterfowl draped in pink ribbons!
Enjoy the food and traverse the main street to drink in all the local flavor. This is a part of Americana that definitely deserves to be preserved.
